A very determined Haslemere U9s had their first taste of contact rugby today at the Waverley Festival at Cranleigh.
First was a very close run match against Camberley, with 3 great tries from Jacob Scotson, Ben Poole and Ollie Henton. We lost by one try but tackling was excellent from the whole team especially Jake Power and Kai Phillips-Mateo in the second half. Final score 4-3 to Camberley.
Next up was the hosts Cranleigh - we came out ready this time from the first whistle and pulled off a spectacular game winning 3-0. Tries from Jake Power, Will Connolly and Kai Phillips-Mateo. Good scrum half link play from Freddie Pendlebury and great tackling from all.
Third match vs. the as yet undefeated Farnham was an extremely tough game and although the final score was 4-0 to Farnham, we battled hard throughout the game showing real grit against the favourites.
Last up was Guildford - another tough battle where we came worst off but we showed true potential for the future - some fantastic tackling from Dylan Beesley, Miles Huffam, Jamie Steele, Ben Cruttwell, Jake Power and Ben Bysouth. Final score 5-0 to Guildford
After such hard games and true team spirit on and off the pitch it was very hard to choose a man of the tournament so we chose two!
Will Connolly - some great runs and excellent tackling
Jake Power - for carrying over the hard yards and ferocious tackling.
Overall as joint third position with Camberley and Cranleigh this was our best start to the season EVER! Looking forward to doing it all again next Sunday.
