The U21's travelled to Effingham & Leatherhead for the latest round of the Surrey U21 Cup,played in stormy conditions that were a testament to the efforts of all concerned that the match was able to go ahead at all.
Despite the conditions, there were periods of expansive play from both sides but inevitably the game was centered around the forwards, who were evenly matched.
The first half ended with honours even at one converted penalty apiece.
In the second half, Haslemere determined to take advantage of the slope and a strong following wind to pin the opposition down on their own 22, but the tenacity of the opposition forwards coupled with the inability to comply with the Referee's offside warnings meant that it was Haslemere who were forced to defend.
The outcome of the contest was, in the final event, decided on penalties. Haslemere converted a second penalty in the second half and Effingham & Leatherhead had an opportunity to levelthe score towards the end of play, but were thwarted by the strength of the head wind, which carried the ball in a graceful arc back away from the posts and into touch behind the kicker!
