Haslemere U11 Victorious at Guildfordians B Festival

Haslemere U11's pulled out their performance of the year to run out cup winners of the Guidlfordian U11's B Festival against some toough opposition.

In a very full tournament over a long day, the boys got progressively better as the day went on and the clouds darkened to finish 2nd out of 10 in after the round robin pool stage on tries scored and make it through to the final against Battersea.

The team concentrated really well and tried hard all day, with excellent tackling throughout combined with some classy back play. However it was the strong straight driving and rucking, of the forwards that paved the way. Ably lead by captain Ben Holland, with great pick and drives form Ollie, Luke, Archie, Freddy, Alex and Tom Dorton, the pack won every scrum and most lineouts and got better and better throughout the day at driving and rucking and winning the ball.

Special mention to Jesse who was everywhere in every game invariably first to the breakdown. Our first game was a tight affair against a strong Old Alleynians B team who kept the ball well. Throughout the first half the backs, particularly Tom S, Ben M and Ged tackled brilliantly to stop OA's progress and when we finally got the ball Will nearly went over in the corner after a classy backs move through lots of hands. The second half continued to be tight until the final minute of the game when a few missed tackles let OA's over in the game with only the last play to come,so we lost 1-0, but that was to be the last try we let in all day.

In the next game against Teddington B's, the forwards started to play really well and drove well to run out 1-0 winners. In our 3rd game the forwards continued their excellent play and the backs started firing, running in 6 tries to 0 versus Windsor B's. The last pool game was a walkover 1 - 0. So with a supierior try tally, we made the 1st v 2nd place final against a strong Battersea side. Ollie caught the ball from the kickoff and set off on a barnstorming run only stopped just short of the line, but great support play saw Tom S eventually go over for the try.

Again the forwards took the game to Battersea really well and were rewarded with another try for Archie from some more excellent driving play by Ollie and the whole pack. In the seocnd half some great pressure from Zac and Jack and Tom forced Battersea back behind their line and Tom pounced on a loose ball to score, 3-0. The rest of the half we contained Battersea well with some more good driving from our forwards and handling from our backs with a nice move from Luca on the wing nearly resulting in a score.

Final score 3-0 to Haslemere and the cup champions. A great perrformance by the whole team, played 5, won 4, lost 1, tries for 11, against 1.
