HCRC Lockdown Challenge 2020

HCRC Lockdown Challenge 2020

Peter “Pedro” Harris28 Apr 2020 - 19:43

This period of lockdown and social distancing can be challenging for everyone. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t take a virtual road-trip as a club.

The Challenge
The challenge set is to ‘travel’ from Haslemere Rugby Club in Surrey (UK) to Surrey, North Dakota (US) by walking, running or bike – within 63days (9 weeks), starting on the 4th May 2020 and finishing on the 5th July 2020. The total distance to be covered – collectively as a club – is 4,123 miles

Why are we doing this?
There are a couple of reasons; (1) We all need something to focus on during this period of dystopian weirdness, (2) It gets you out of the house at least once a week (and hopefully a whole lot more), (3) it provides a bit of friendly “fitness rivalry” – fun for all, but especially those looking to keep their fitness up over the next couple of months, and (4) there is an opportunity to raise some funds for local NHS groups and care homes (details tbc)

Who can get involved?
The challenge is open to all HCRC playing members from Colts to Seniors and will also involve coaches, committee members and club volunteers.

But I don’t train on a regular basis
You don’t have to be mega fit (believe me, neither are the Senior team!!), or mega dedicated. If you sign up to the challenge, our only ask is that you commit to a least one period of exercise per week. The exercise can be as tough or as easy as you need it to be (walking is perfectly acceptable! There are no prizes for a quick pace). Note: We would expect the playing members to contribute to two or more periods of exercise a week for the challenge.

How do I get involved?
If you’re eager to participate, then there are a couple of things that you need to do:
1. Download Strava onto your phone (or at worst, your computer)
2. Set up an account for yourself (its free)
3. Become a member of two Strava clubs (1) “HCRC Lockdown Challenge Run”, and (2) “HCRC Lockdown Challenge Ride”. Make sure that you are member of BOTH clubs

How do I record / enter my activities?
Once you’ve completed the above set up then there are three ways in which you can record you activity:
1. Watch: If you’re lucky enough to have a GPS running watch, make sure that it is linked to upload any activity to your newly created Strava account (either directly or via a companion app, like Garmin Connect). Any activities that you record with that device will automatically upload to the relevant Strava clubs (as long as you sync it). Just make sure that you record the activity correctly (either a 'run' or a 'ride')
2. Phone: If you don’t have a watch, you can record your walks, runs, rides directly onto your phone (as long as you’ve downloaded the Strava app). Just make sure that you record the activity correctly (either a 'run' or a 'ride')
3. Computer: If you don’t have either a watch, or you can’t take your phone with you on your activity, then the last resort is to manually upload your activity into Strava (either via the app or on your computer). We only ask that you enter your distance honestly (!!), there are no points for exaggerating your length. Just make sure that you record the activity correctly (either a ‘run’ or a ‘ride’)

How do we keep up to date with progress?
The completed activities will be pulled from Strava every Sunday evening by the highly skilled HCRC analytics team, and a round-up circulated via a news update on the HCRC Website (and twitter and FB). There’ll be callouts for the highest weekly distance, total distance to date, and a reminder of the total distance remaining.
