HCRC supporting Haslemere Food Bank

HCRC supporting Haslemere Food Bank

Peter “Pedro” Harris30 Nov 2020 - 22:16

The Christmas period is almost upon us and now more than ever the wider community needs our support

The Haslemere Food Bank have seen a rise in use over the course of 2020 growing from 5 food parcels a week being delivered to families to between 20 – 28 parcels a week.

Despite Haslemere being quite an affluent area, our community still requires support, it is not a privilege to eat but a basic human right, so why are so many people going hungry in 2020?

Everyday people in the UK go hungry for a range of reasons from redundancy, an unexpected bill on low income and more recently furlough or those who have been ill and not able to work.

So how does Food Bank Work?

People are referred through schools, Citizens Advice, The Health Centre and various other agencies. You are given a voucher for your parcel to collect your food. The Haslemere Food Bank can assist with food, personal hygiene, sanitary products and domestic cleaning products.

How we can support?

We are calling on you, our wonderful members to make a donation to the Food Bank this December, but how? Donations can be made directly to the Food Bank at Haslemere Methodist Church or you can make your donation to the dedicated donation point at the club on Sunday Training Days.

What Can I Donate?

All within date, unopened tinned and packaged food items, sanitary products and domestic cleaning products are very much appreciated.

However, the food bank has also requested the following for the Christmas Period:

  • Modest sizes of biscuit boxes
  • Chocolates and other sweets
  • Small Xmas cakes/slices of cakes
  • Mince Pies
  • Small bags of nuts and multipack of crisps

Whilst they are very thankful and appreciate the generosity large boxes of cakes and mince pies they are difficult to make into a balanced pack so it’s better to buy 2 small items than one large
