Haslemere momentum continues against Raynes Park

Haslemere welcomed Raynes Park on Saturday, eager to continue from where they left off in the final 15 minutes the week before against Woking. Dave Head captained a Haslemere team made up of 6 changes from the previous week with debutant Alex Clynch earning a spot on the bench whilst the pack was bolstered by Ben Stephenson, Charlie Butterworth and Jonny Fowler.
Haslemere showed their attacked intent early on with only two minutes gone, fullback JP McCumisky stepping into the back line and carving his way through the Raynes Park defense, finally being brought to ground on RP's 22m line. The forwards continued to rumble towards the try line however RP managed to turn the ball over and clear their lines. The ten minutes that followed was a tight affair, Haslemere doing a sterling job at disrupting the RP lineout and holding up driving mauls but being let down by some ill discipline. The RP tactic was very much kick in behind the wingers and their lack of ambition was confirmed when opting for the posts from a penalty from the touchline on half way. Haslemere adopted a different approach with Robbie Campbell using good footwork to repeatedly break the gain line and George Dyer's delightful chip and hard chasing by Haslemere resulting in a penalty on the RP 22 which was not converted into 3 points.
Twenty minutes in and the Mere park were starting to get the ascendency up front, again shunting RP backward towards their try line, resulting in a 15 minute delay in play for a suspected broken ankle from a RP player.
Now playing on the training pitch whilst waiting for an ambulance, Haslemere turned up the heat once again and got their reward with Chad White once again crashing over for the first try of the match.
Half time saw one change with Alex Clynch coming on at 6 with Dave Head moving into the second row, a similar trend from the first half with Haslemere looking dangerous but lacking the fluidity in the backs required to cause serious problems. When RP repeatedly battered the Haslemere line for 10 minutes in the second half, they defended with the heart and intensity which has sometimes been missing, the end result being two RP penalties off the tee but no tries conceded. The final 10 minutes saw the Haslemere pack demolish RP until they could take no more, another excellent scrum and great ball control at 8 from Chad White resulted in another try for the lively 17 year old with five minutes to go. The final five minutes were tense but Haslemere held on for a 10-6 victory which probably flattered the visitors, nevertheless it was a great victory and moral booster, with so many players in their teens or early twenties the next few years has the potential to be bright.
