Haslemere were full of confidence after last week but this would turn out to be another painfully close match...

Reigate kicked the ball off to start the game and within the first few minutes they managed to win a scrum on the Haslemere 5 metre line. Reigate squeezed hard at the scrum, forced Haslemere back and their no8 had an easy time of scoring an early try that was converted, 7-0.

Fortunately Haslemere were up for the challenge and got stuck into the opposition. Second row Dave Head managed to pick up the ball when Reigate were turned over in a maul, and he found hooker Tristan Rissik in support who broke through a couple of tackles before drawing the full back and passing to winger Jolly Callcut to score on his debut under the posts, converted by full back Adam Whitehead, 7-7 after 8 minutes.
Reigate had a weight advantage in the forwards and they were difficult to move off the ball. Not until quarter of an hour did Haslemere manage to work their way out of their half again and put pressure on Reigate with a powerful mauling drive after a line out catch from Head.

Haslemere enjoyed a purple patch where they now dominated the territory, winning penalties and scrimmaging on the Reigate 5 metre line but despite the dominance the Reigate defence held strong. Past midway in the half Reigate won a line out 10 metres from their line but flanker Ryan Perrott poached the ball and the Haslemere forwards in support kept the momentum allowing Perrott to then peel off and waltz over for a try in the left corner, which was then well converted by Whitehead, 14-7.

Reigate only came back into the half after a Haslemere mistake in a loose pass when attacking their try line that allowed a swift counter attack back into the Haslemere 22. Reigate were now asserting themselves and winning the ball at the scrum against the head, and even choosing a scrum when awarded a penalty, but Haslemere held out and a clearance kick well chased by James Clarke with a follow up tackle relieved the pressure and the half ended with Haslemere up 14-7.

The second half was a tight affair with plenty of mistakes on the very muddy pitch. An early incursion from Reigate was stopped in its tracks with a tackle from centre Cliff Young, and fly half James Blatherwick kicked to clear the action up the pitch. The subsequent action was stale mate but there were good runs from prop Zorro Hawkes, scrum half Josh Andrade, and no8 Damien Kellerman, and not many opportunities to run the ball down the line. More often than not the action was in the Haslemere half, and just before the middle of the half Reigate had a penalty and they kicked to the corner before executing a catch and drive at the line out which was stopped short, but they were awarded a penalty which they took quickly and scored, 14-14.
Haslemere were unable to move the action into the Reigate half for any meaningful time. So when Reigate were awarded a free kick at a scrum they ran the ball back deep into the Haslemere half before then being awarded a penalty from a scrum. Reigate chose to shoot for goal almost in front of the posts, but the ball went just wide of the uprights. A poor Haslemere drop kick meant the pressure was right back on Haslemere.
With 5 minutes to play Blatherwick did manage to clear the pressure with a kick into the Reigate half but James Clarke followed through on the Reigate player after he had kicked it away, and he was yellow carded. Haslemere were not immediately punished with only 14 men, but yet again were the architects of their demise when trying to run the ball out from their half, and after a loose pass from a Haslemere forward, Reigate won a penalty from the subsequent breakdown in front of the posts, which they duly converted, 14-17.

From the restart Haslemere were determined to get something out of the game; they soon got possession again, drove the ball through Hawkes and then Sam Beadle broke some tackles and Haslemere were on the Reigate 22. Unfortunately at the next breakdown Reigate were again awarded the penalty and this effectively meant the end of the game as Reigate controlled possession and ran down the clock.

Haslemere again had lost a closely fought game that they would have felt justified in winning.

Hawkes, Rissik, Kiley, Head, Crabtree, Perrott, Robson, Kellerman, Andrade, Blatherwick (captain), Clarke, Young, Beadle, Callcut, Whitehead. Subs: S Powell, Thornber
