A good win for what promises to be one of the strongest sides Haslemere has fielded in a while.

Looking resplendent in their new 2014/15 kit, sponsored by Young’s, the Haslemere 1st XV senior rugby team travelled away to play Wandsworthians at their club on the fringe of London - for their second Surrey 4 league game of the season.

Haslemere got off to a rip roaring start, demonstrating the tactics and game play practised extensively in pre season and training, with a great team try based upon the initial powerful forward running of prop Zorro Hawkes and number 8 Damian Kellerman, with scrum half Josh Andrade then releasing the backs to exploit the gaps, allowing winger JP McCumisky to score in the corner 5-0. This was swiftly followed by a second try in a similar manner as first flanker Dave Head then Big Ben Stephenson softened up the opposition before fly half Jonjo Conway then breaking the line, sidestepping the Wandsworthian full back, and scoring between the posts, which he also followed up with a conversion 12-0.

The Haslemere forwards were dominating the first half allowing Conway to keep the opposition pinned in their half before then hammering close to the maul and spinning it wide for centre James Blatheriwck and Cliff Young to see whether they could break through. Half an hour into the match a third Haslemere try came from flanker Shane Vickery temporarily subbing for Andrade at scrum half, when he dummied a Wandsworth guard from a ruck five metres out from the Wandsworthian try line to dive over near the posts, converted by Conway. The halftime whistle saw Haslemere 17-0 up.

The second half started a little more messily to the frustration of Haslemere's Director of Rugby and senior coach, John Hatcher. A dubious high tackle from prop Godber found him sitting out for ten minutes, when Wandsworthians capitalised on their greater numbers to run in a converted try, 17-7.

Haslemere responded with two more tries to put the match out of reach of Wandsworth. The first Haslemere try came from a typical strong run from Simon Dillsworth who then popped the ball to the supporting runner, Vickery, who ran 20 metres eluding the cover tackle to score in the corner, 22-7. The Wandsworthian’s defence was soon in trouble again as a good back move saw Blatherwick burst through a tackle, then offload to Young who crashed over to score in the left corner, 27-7. The last score of the match was left to the home team. The match finished 27-12 in Haslemere's favour, a good win for what promises to be one of the strongest sides Haslemere has fielded in a while; this young, up and coming team have drawn their first blood and now look set to make their mark in the league this season.
